Maren Morris Slays At The Illinois State Fair

GIRL! Does Maren Morris know how to put on a show. Morris headlined the Illinois State Fair grandstand on August 19th. Brittney Spencer opened for Maren. Brittney is a humble burst of energy in a full denim outfit, poofy hair, and dusty old boots. While her outfit was loud, her voice was soft and comforting. My favorites of hers were “Sober and Skinny” and “One Hundred Years Old.” While she did not play it, I recommend listening to her version of “Cowboy Take Me Away.” She will be releasing new music shortly and I cannot wait.

Maren rocked the stage in a copper-colored strapless corset top that I want in my closet, jeans, simple heels, and a freshly styled bob. For a petite woman, she has a powerhouse voice. She sounds exactly like she does on the radio. I am amazed by the notes she can hit. Her emphasized body movements make her personality larger than life. She got her steps in strutting her stuff across the stage

She opened with “Circles Around This Town.” Most of her setlist was off her 1st album, “Hero.” She played a lot of her hits and my favorite deep cuts including “Drunk Girls Don’t Cry” and “Once.” She admitted that “Detours” was her favorite song off her latest album. Morris encored with “The Bones” and “My Church.” Her first verse of “My Church” live always sends chills down my spine.

I want to shout out the sign language interpreters that were on stage as well. I have never been to a concert that has interpreters on stage, but I loved it. They were backup dancers, professional lip-syncers, and language experts rolled into one. They brought in another layer of inclusivity. The interpreters were a cool addition that even someone who does not have a hearing disability can appreciate and enjoy.

The fireworks display was perfectly timed as the crowd exited the grandstand and flocked to the beer tents to see some of the local talent including Springfield’s own Lick Creek. The Illinois State Fair had other top name acts this summer such as Old Dominion, Tim McGraw, and Lonestar. As well as highlighted up-and-coming artists like Hunter Girl, Cooper Alan, Red Clay Strays, Avery Ana, Ward Davis, and Jake Worthington. Nelly, Ashanti, and Ja Rule closed out the State Fair on August 20th.
