Schubas Tavern, with a standing-room capacity of 200, is a cherished gem in the heart of Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood. Since 1989, it has earned a reputation as one of the finest small music venues in the country, boasting exceptional acoustics that amplify every note played within its walls. Built-in 1903 as part of the Schlitz Brewery’s ambitious project, the building is a neo-Gothic beauty that stands as a testament to the architectural grandeur of the past. Known as a Tied House, it’s one of the few remaining establishments that continues to operate as a saloon. For decades, Schubas has been the launching pad for many Chicago artists, as well as a stage for national stars seeking a closer connection with their audience.

The night commenced with an electrifying performance by Theo Kandel, a New York native with familial ties to the Chicago suburbs. His 35-minute set proved to be the ideal prelude, warming up the audience with its heartfelt energy. Theo kicked things off with Flight To JFK, a touching song about long-distance relationships. He then treated the crowd to On My Mind, a track released in 2024. In a nod to the past, he included a cover of Richard Thompson's 1991 classic 1952 Vincent Black Lightning. The set took a personal turn with Leroy's Song, a poignant tribute to his grandfather, who once owned delis in Chicago and is now 93 years old. Theo rounded off his performance with Nothing New and The Painters, leaving the crowd buzzing with anticipation for what was to follow.

As the anticipation reached a crescendo, the stage was set for Max McNown, who is currently out on his first-ever headlining tour. The excitement in the air was palpable as Max launched into Turned Into Missing You, with the crowd erupting into cheers. The intimacy of Schubas was the perfect backdrop for his emotive lyrics and dynamic stage presence. The set flowed seamlessly with Love I Got Left and Dead Set, as the audience sang along word for word, swept up in the shared emotional journey. The Way I Wanna continued the momentum, followed by Rather Have A Nightmare and It's Not Your Fault, where Max engaged the audience with his charismatic banter.

One of the evening's standout moments was when Max performed Wandering, a heartfelt ode to his mother back in Oregon. It was a tender reminder of the personal stories woven into his music. The title track from his recent album, Night Diving, showcased the talents of his band, as they took center stage for a captivating solo. Max’s emotional journey continued with Freezing In November, the first song he ever released, resonating deeply with the crowd.

The setlist continued with Fishing Line, Willfully Blind, Roses & Wolves, and Hotel Bible, each song bringing its own unique energy. A highlight was when Max performed Marley, seamlessly integrating his only cover of the night, Bob Marley’s Three Little Birds. This unexpected tribute brought a universal sense of joy and camaraderie to the room.

Max concluded his set with Better Me For You, dedicating it to a girl in the front row with brown eyes. The evening's chill was kept at bay by the warmth of the music and the connection shared between artist and audience. Rather than leaving the stage for an encore, Max playfully asked the crowd to pretend he had just returned, maintaining the momentum and intimacy of the performance. The encore featured a special duet with Theo Kandel on Love Me Back, culminating with his chart-topping hit A Lot More Free, which brought the evening to a powerful close.
