Nate Smith Heats Chicago Up With World On Fire Tour
Nate Smith is my first show of 2024 and it was already my most anticipated. I have been begging for a Nate Smith headlining show to come to Chicago since he put out his self-titled album and I guess the rest of Chicago felt the same. Tickets sold out faster than a cheetah on the hunt.
Opening for Nate on the “World on Fire” tour, Dylan Schneider. This is my 3rd time seeing Dylan and I’ve said the same thing every time, “He needs a band.” I understand some openers cannot afford to bring a band on tour with them yet, but it can make all the difference. Well, my prayers were finally answered. He opened up with a full band allowing him to bring the energy and move around the stage rather than the previous times I saw him stationary playing his guitar by himself. He played “Two Black X’s” and “How Does It Sound” which put him on the map in 2017. He brought some of his new upbeat music including “Bad Decisions” which he released earlier this year. I think he is finally starting to come into his own sound and style, something that comes with time and experience. It might have taken a few years, but Dylan Schneider you have officially proven yourself and won me over.
Nate started out the night with my personal favorite “If I Could Stop Loving You.” Then followed by feel-good songs “LFG” and “Alright, Alright, Alright” which makes me think of Matthew McConaughey every time, especially with the “Dazed and Confused” reference in the lyrics. I could’ve left after those three songs to be honest. My heart was content with that, but Nate continued to bring the heat.
He played unreleased “Wish I Never Felt,” “Bullet Proof,” and “Hollywood.” Of those 3 my favorite was “Bullet Proof” which will be released on February 9th. Expect a Nate Smith EP out sometime around April 2024. Nate showed his rock side covering Nirvana’s “Heart Shaped Box.” His voice was meant for rock covers. He slowed things down for “Sleeve,” “Oil Spot,” and “Under My Skin.” Nate was amazed that a decent chunk of the crowd knew the words to these deep cuts.
Nate hauled through his set in an hour flat which I appreciated on a weeknight. You can’t beat a solid set and being in bed before 11 PM. His encore consisted of “Wreckage” and “World on Fire” which is currently on its 8th consecutive week at #1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart. He has a voice that will be belting out in sold-out arenas in no time. If you missed Nate this time around, you can catch him at another stop on his “World on Fire Tour” or this summer on July 14th at Windy City Smokeout in Chicago.
