Charles Wesley Godwin Sells Out In Milwaukee
Shank hall in Milwaukee was jam-packed on a Thursday night for rising West Virginia born singer/songwriter Charles Wesley Godwin. Godwin a native of Morgantown, WV brings his style of Americana Music to the Country Music scene.
To kick off the night was former Voice contestant and Nashville singer/songwriter Taylor Alexander. His set was a highly impressive one with a lot of fan interaction & mostly all originals. He did squeeze in 2 covers one of Garth and the other was the song that got Adam Levine to turn around his chair which was Cher’s Believe, giving the song a very interesting vibe to it as well.
Wall-to-wall Milwaukee showed up to support the headliner Charles Wesley Godwin. The marquee blinked Sold Out and the house lights dimmed. The Alleghany High took the stage followed shortly after by CWG. The band was off and running opening the set with “Hardwood Floors” & a crowd favorite “Lyin’ Low”.
Charles threw in a cover of fellow West Virginia native Brad Paisley’s “Mud On The Tires” and talked about how he and his buddies would drive around listening to Brad and how he is an inspiration, hey if that Glen Dale, WV kid made it why can’t this guy. Charles talked about how this day October 6th was a special one to him, He is celebrating his 4th wedding anniversary out on the road. He told the sold-out crowd
“I’m just out here bringing home the bacon, so that way I don’t miss another Anniversary again” – said Godwin
as he went into the song “Temporary Town”
Charles ended up giving the band a break and did 3 songs acoustic. One that stood out to us was “Cranes Of Potter”, he talked about a plant going up and massive cranes everywhere, during the dig for this site, 2 feet down a body was found. The girl lived over 150 years ago, and they had no identity for her. So, Charles gave her a name in this song, and it could be one of the most powerful written songs as of late.
My highlight of the night is when Charles Wesley Godwin spoke about his European tour and found out that while gone, he lost his grandfather. Knowing he would want him to finish his work, Charles wrote the song “Over Yonder” shortly after. He had the crowd in the palm of his hand during this emotional and moving song that picks up the pace right at the right time.
He closed out his set by bringing a little piece of home to Wisconsin telling the crowd
“We are going to bring a little West Virginia to Milwaukee”
& then closed with “Sweet Baby’s Arms” & of course the only way a WV kid can close out a show is “Country Roads” Good thing the band has a night off because I think they left it all on the Shank Hall stage from one of the best performances to date.
