Russell Dickerson Brings the Big Wheels and Back Roads Tour to Boston

Boston has always been on my bucket list of places to see. So when I saw that the Chicago White Sox were playing the Boston Red Sox and Russell Dickerson was playing down the street on the same night, my credit card practically booked the trip for me. Opening for Russell were Restless Road and Parmalee. Taking one look at Restless Road you might think they were the Jonas Brothers with mullets, but their sound is anything but pop. They will be headlining their own tour in no time. As someone who hasn’t listened to Restless Road prior to this show, my favorites were “Last Rodeo” and “Bar Friends.”

Parmalee has changed a lot since 2015 when I last saw them including the addition of several singles on the charts. They opened with “Just the Way” and then transitioned into David Lee Murphy’s “Dust on the Bottle.” Lead singer Matt Thomas sang the hell out of “Gonna Love You” which I immediately added to my Apple Music playlist. The crowd got to dancing during their latest radio hit “Girl in Mine.” They did a rock cover of Usher’s “Yeah” that I think really confused the Gen Z teeny boppers in the audience, but the millennials loved it. They closed with their chart-topping hit “Carolina” which put the group on the map.

Russell kicked off the show with the tour title, “Big Wheels” and kept the show going with high-energy songs “Every Little Thing and “Sorry.” Russell has some of the best stage presence of any artist I have ever seen. His emphasized body movements and signature power poses make for great pictures. He uses every inch of the stage to his advantage. If they ever make a Magic Mike IV, Russell should be in it with his dance moves. I don’t know what’s better, his stank face or his stanky leg.

Russell channeled his inner beach bum bringing out a lawn chair and a pink flamingo koozie for “Down on the Beach.” He also played “Ride the Wave” off of his latest EP “3 Months 2 Streets Down.” He brought out Restless Road and Parmalee during “It’s About Time” for a good ole sing-along and shots. Smoke machines, lighting, and confetti added to the overall party atmosphere.

He transitioned from deep-cut “MGNO” to introducing his team. The band’s baby pictures were being shown on the big screen at the end of the night which was hilarious. He closed out with his #1 hits “Blue Tacoma” and “Yours.” Russell Dickerson does not lie when he says he brings the RD party to town. The Confetti and all. Great way to end my birthday weekend in Boston.
