Old Dominion Dominates at Allstate Arena

Allstate Arena had people packed in like a can of condensed soup for Old Dominion’s Rosemont stop on the “No Bad Vibes” tour. Kylie Morgan made her return to the Chicagoland area since kicking off her headlining tour at Carol’s Pub earlier this year. Kylie opened her 20-minute set with “I Only Date Cowboys.” She was a walking disco ball in her bedazzled top and bright cowboy boots. The highlight of her performance was her medley of Gwen Stefani songs and choreographed dance moves with her band. She closed with her hit from earlier this year “If He Wanted To He Would.” I will definitely be seeing her again when she stops at Joe’s on Weed Street in March of 2024.

Chase Rice performed his hits as well as crowd favorites from his latest album, “I Hate Cowboys & All Dogs Go To Hell.” The crowd sang every word of “Eyes on You” and “Lonely If You Are.” He had his black lab on-screen during his emotional song, “Bench Seat.” To my surprise, his band performed all 7 minutes of “Oklahoma.” Chase played the Florida Georgia Line hit “Cruise” which he had a hand in writing as well as “Drinkin’ Beer. Talkin’ God. Amen.” which he recorded with the duo. Chase Rice made a fan out of me on his headlining tour earlier this year and I am excited to see where he goes from here.

The best way I can describe Old Dominion is that their shows really are no bad vibes. The band came to Rosemont straight off their 6th straight win for Academy of Country Music Group of the Year and they aren’t slowing down any time soon. They opened with upbeat #1 hit “Make It Sweet” followed by “No Hard Feelings.” Lead singer Matthew Ramsey broke out his mini xylophone for the chorus. Ramsey moved about the stage flawlessly despite his pelvis injury in March. Lead guitarist Brad Tursi showed off his talents by shredding it between songs.

In October of this year, the band put out their 5th studio album “Memory Lane.” They played the title track and several others from that record including “I Should’ve Married You.” They performed the audience request for “A Million Things” off of that album. I love that the band has been taking 3 audience requests per show based on handmade signs from the crowd. They sang “All I Know About Girls” as another audience request from a young boy in the crowd.

In my opinion, the highlight of the show was the audience request for “Can’t Get You.” This song is a hidden gem that even someone who’s never heard it before can enjoy and appreciate live. The lighting and stage production is some of the best I’ve seen this year especially since there is so much unpredictability in the requests. Matthew talked about how Old Dominion is a band, but they are songwriters first. I love that they keep “Save It for a Rainy Day” in their set. It is a song they wrote that friend and long-time tour mate Kenny Chesney recorded and brought to #1. They closed out the show with tropical feel-good songs “Hawaii” and “I Was on a Boat That Day.” You can catch Old Dominion, Chase Rice, and Kylie Morgan on the “No Bad Vibes” tour through the end of the year.
